Edit with AI
5 min read
Overview
Edit with AI lets you refine one LLM-generated answer without re-running the whole row.
Right-click an answer cell, choose Edit with AI, and describe the change (“make this shorter”, “add a citation to the 2024 report”, “keep the same sources”). The current cell stays as-is while you chat. Nothing is written to the sheet until you click Accept.
This is different from Re-run Row, which regenerates every AI column on the row, and from Feedback, which records quality comments without changing the cell.
If you’re unable to access this feature, your firm may not have it enabled yet. Reach out to your internal support team.
Who is it for
Anyone with Owner, Can manage, or Can edit on the sheet who needs to steer a single answer — style, length, citations, or a missing fact — without discarding the rest of the row.
Can answer collaborators do not see this action. They can still edit assigned rows manually.
Benefits
Steer one cell. Change this answer only. Other columns on the row stay put.
Preview before write. Follow-up turns stay in the dialog. Accept writes the chosen proposal; closing without Accept leaves the cell unchanged.
Keep working from the live cell. The dialog starts from the text currently in the cell, including your manual edits — not only the first agent draft.
Same sources and tools as answering. Built-in answer columns and subagent columns both use the same search scope and tools that produced the original answer.
Use cases
Shorten or tone-adjust an answer before review
Ask the model to keep or add citations from the existing sources
Fix a factual miss (“include the AUM figure from the 2024 factsheet”) without re-running the row
Iterate over a few turns, then Accept the last proposal you like
Step-by-step
1. Open Edit with AI
Open a sheet that has an LLM-generated answer column (for example Answers).
Right-click the answer cell — not the Question cell, not the header row.
Select Edit with AI.
The item is hidden when the feature is off, on question/header cells, and for Can answer users. It is shown but disabled when the table is busy (Updating…), the row is Verified / locked, or the row is Ready for Verification (manual edits only).
2. Review the dialog
The dialog title is Edit with AI. The subtitle is: Describe changes, then accept to write the new answer into the cell.
You will see:
A Question bubble with the row question
The current answer as formatted markdown (the live cell text)
A composer at the bottom with placeholder Describe what to change
The composer starts empty. Clicking outside the dialog does not close it. Use the X or Escape to close.
3. Describe the change
Type an instruction and send it. Send is disabled until the input has real text (whitespace-only does not send).
While the model works, the dialog shows Thinking…. The transcript scrolls to the latest turn; the composer stays pinned.
Your instruction appears as a user bubble. The proposed answer appears as flush markdown (not a chat bubble), with Copy and Accept underneath.
4. Continue the conversation (optional)
You can send another instruction against the latest proposal (“shorter”, “add the fee table”). Each turn stays in this dialog only. Closing the dialog discards every unaccepted turn. There is no draft saved on the sheet.
5. Copy or Accept
Copy copies the proposal as plain text. Citation tokens are stripped the same way as other table copy actions, so you get readable text for email or Word.
Accept writes that proposal into the answer cell and closes the dialog. You will see Answer updated.
If the table becomes busy before you Accept, the write is blocked and you see the same Table is busy. message as Re-run.
If generation fails, the dialog shows Failed to generate a new answer and your typed instruction stays in the composer so you can retry.
Citations in the dialog
Numbered citations in a proposal download the source file. They do not open the table side panel (the dialog would hide it).
The same citation on the cell, after you close the dialog, still opens the side panel or Answer Library preview as usual.
How this compares to other actions
Action | What it changes | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
Edit with AI | One answer cell, after you Accept a proposal | Steer wording, length, or sources on this cell |
Re-run Row | All AI columns on the row (answers, references, hallucination, …) | Start the row over from the current question and sources |
Manual edit | The cell you type into | You already know the final text |
Feedback | Nothing on the sheet; stored as feedback | Report quality issues without changing the answer |
Permissions
Role | Edit with AI |
|---|---|
Owner | Yes |
Can manage | Yes |
Can edit | Yes |
Can answer | No — item is hidden |
The row must also be fully editable (typically Needs Review). Verified / locked rows and Ready for Verification (manual-only) show the item disabled with the same tooltips as Re-run.
Tips & tricks
Start from the live cell. If you already shortened the answer by hand, Edit with AI uses that text as the current answer.
Be specific. “Keep the citations and cut this to two sentences” works better than “improve this.”
Built-in answers vs subagents. The dialog looks the same. Subagent columns use the column’s configured assistant and can take longer (up to a few minutes). If a turn times out, retry or simplify the instruction.
Do not use this to re-run the row. If the question or sources changed and you want every AI column refreshed, use Re-run Row.
Limitations
Feature flag. Edit with AI is gated by FEATURE_FLAG_AGENTIC_TABLE_EDIT_WITH_AI_UN_24386 (off by default). When the flag is off, the menu item is hidden.
LLM answer cells only. Question, section, header, assignee, and review-status cells do not offer this action.
Answer Library sheets. Answer Library is not enabled with AI, so Edit with AI is not available there. Refine answers on a working sheet, then add the verified sheet to the library.
Accept writes the answer cell only. The dedicated References column is not updated when you Accept. Citations inside the accepted answer still work. If several answer columns share one References column, that shared list stays on the last row run until a follow-up ships.
Unaccepted turns are discarded. Closing the dialog (X or Escape) drops the conversation. There is no confirm-if-dirty prompt today.
No hallucination re-score on this path. Accept does not refresh the hallucination column.
Dialog citations download the file. They do not open the PDF / library side panel.
