Select Files to Chat

Select Files to Chat — Focus the AI on specific Knowledge Base documents to get faster, more accurate, and highly relevant answers.
Overview
Select Files to Chat lets you choose which documents from the Knowledge Base the assistant draws on when answering your questions. Instead of searching across everything, you point the AI to exactly what's relevant — resulting in faster, more accurate, and more focused responses.
Who is this for?
This feature is particularly useful for:
Role | How they benefit |
|---|---|
All users | Get precise answers grounded in specific documents rather than the entire Knowledge Base. |
Knowledge admins | Manage document access and control which content is used as context. |
Teams with large Knowledge Bases | Avoid noise from irrelevant or outdated content by scoping the search. |
Portfolio managers | Work within the model's token and page limits by narrowing context to only the files that matter. |
Benefits
Benefit | What it means for you |
|---|---|
Focused responses | The assistant only considers the documents you select, improving accuracy and relevance. |
Less noise | No more sifting through outdated or unrelated materials to find the answer you need. |
Tailored context | Scope the assistant's knowledge to exactly what matters — a specific project, report, or the latest market updates. |
Use cases
Use case | Example |
|---|---|
Document summarization | Select a specific report or set of files and ask the AI to summarize or compare them. |
Market updates | Narrow the context to the latest ingested market files to get timely, targeted answers. |
Large Knowledge Base navigation | Filter down to a relevant folder to avoid irrelevant or outdated results. |
Step-by-step guide
Step 1: Upload your files (optional, Knowledge Admins only)
Navigate to the Knowledge Base.
Upload the documents you want the assistant to use. They will automatically appear in the side panel for selection.

Step 2: Start a new chat
Go to your Unique AI space.
Select the Internal Search tool.
The Internal Files side panel opens automatically.

Step 3: Select your documents
Browse the available documents. By default, all documents are included when Internal Search is active.
To narrow the context, select specific folders or individual files. Selecting a folder includes all its contents recursively.
When done, close the panel by clicking the cross button in the corner of the side panel.
Step 4: Ask your question
Start chatting — the assistant will only use the files and folders you selected.
To update your selection mid-conversation, click Select Files again to reopen the panel and adjust your choices.

Tips & tricks
Tip | Details |
|---|---|
Files uploaded in chat | Files uploaded directly in the chat won't appear in the side panel, but they will still be used when generating answers. |
Space-level rules | Your company may restrict which documents are visible in the side panel. If you see fewer files than expected, this is likely why. |
Selections aren't saved | Document selections are not stored in chat history. When revisiting a conversation, you'll need to reselect your files. |
Limitations
Limitation | Details |
|---|---|
No saved context | Document selections are not retained between sessions or when revisiting a chat. |
Restricted access | Space-level knowledge rules may limit which documents appear in the side panel. |
